It's like I get to teh 10th hole and forget how to play the game. Usually my middle irons and wedges go south. Putting has been saving me lately but when I stripe a drive down the center and put my approach out of bounds it gets to be difficult. And then it snowballs. How do I get out of a stumble once I am on that slippery slope?
Author: rrweather
Subject: Shanks
Posted: 04 July 2009 at 8:45am

I've been struggling with the same thing throughout my online lessons. It got so bad that I managed to get a ball mark on the hosel 90 degrees from the clubface. Occasionally, I would make solid contact and pull the ball bad. This would get dramatically worse throughout the day.

I am by no means an instructor. What I will say is my left side was breaking down bad in my backswing. Yours appears to be breaking down as well. This would immediately cause my head to dip towards the ball, even though it felt like it was stationary. At some point in the backswing or downswing, I would have to stand up because my body realized it was too close to the ball due to the dip. Bad things would happen from there. You appear to stand up in your backswing. After my last video lesson Al gave me some drills to work on that deal entirely with setup and do not involve hitting balls. Doing these drills in the mirror make me realize how poor my setup was from the beginning. I am convinced (as Chuck, Al, and others have mentioned) if the setup is poor, it is going to be difficult hitting consistently. When I did strike the ball well, there was a great deal of luck that my body was able to overcome the setup errors and the timing happen to be right to make solid contact. When the luck ran out or the timing was off, bad things happened. I am not trying to push the online lessons but I am sold on them. I've had two and I was amazed at what Al could see in my swing. In fact, the things I thought I was doing the best were actually the things I needed to work on. It may take a lesson or two to fix some setup issues but that might be what you need to get back to making solid contact. The one thing I am realizing is there is a reason Chuck has talked so much about proper setup. We are all trying to achieve a rotary golf swing but if the setup is off, it will be hard or impossible to master. My guess is you would be surprised at how much an online lesson or two would help. Just my thoughts. Good luck. I sure as hell know how frustrated you are!

    Author: SoulHacka
Subject: Regressed
Posted: 03 July 2009 at 11:41am

Just another update

Had good progress up until about a week ago, and the dreaded S-word crept back into my swing again. The good news is that I was able to turn it around rather quickly. Since I've accepted the fact that this is one of my "misses" - rather then trying to cure this, my goal is to have a set of tools to use when it raises its head. The difference this time is that I dug in a little intellectually, versus just going to mechanics. i asked myself a few questions:

- Why does this creep in, and when it does, I can consistently shank a bucket of balls? (And the impact marks are in the same place on the club?)

- Why is it that with the different "cures" out there - my weight on heels, weight on toes, standing close, standing far away, open club face, closed club face, hit off one foot, hitting half shots, feet together, my mind still seems to "find" the hosel?

- Conversely, I have all of the same swing faults when I am hitting the ball good - since I cannot expect perfection out of my swing, what is going on that has convinced my mind that the hosel is the place to hit the ball?

- if imy mechanics are throwing me off plane, why dont I hit the hosel square, or the back of the hosel? I only seem to hit the spot right between the face and the hosel.

My conclusion is that at some point in my swing, I have substituted the hosel for the clubface as the "right place" to hit the ball...I am always going to hit the hosel unless I try to hit the ball with some other part of the club. (DUH) Let me explain.

When you hit the head of a nail with a hammer, you think about applying the hammer head to the nail head. Your hands sense where the nail is in relation to the head of the hammer, and you swing and hit - whether its a small swing with a handheld hammer, or a large swing with a sledge hammer. While you must also focus on the path of the hammer, and the technique, you must also have the fundamental mental goal of putting the head of the hammer onto the head of the nail.

Until then, all I was thinking about was weight shift, swing plane, passive arms, balance, etc. I realized that in combination with the aforementioned fundamentals, I needed to also think about putting the club head on the ball with a specific part of the club head.

As quickly as the bad shots came, they left, and I was able to finish my round under 90. I was looking for a cure in my mechanics, when the remedy was more about how I thought about hitting the ball...

Another thing I found - when I was conscious of the fact that i want to hit the ball with the clubhead - my swing naturally slowed itself down, I did not over swing, and I did not throw myself at the ball trying to hit it further. I now had a "hammer" mindset - still keeping all of the fundamentals, just now applying them with a more precise goal.

I hope this is not interpreted as instruction, as this is my personal journey in improving my game - so YMMV. This is also not intended to contradict any of the instruction that has been given here by professionals.

Since the information about curing the S-word is mysterious, maybe my experience can help someone if they run across this in a search...

Edited by SoulHacka - Yesterday at 11:45am
