I'm curious to know what irons most people are playing and with what shaft. I'm currently using Mizuno MP-30's with a stock S300. I'll frequency them tonight. In the past I played TourStage and KZG with Tour Concept X100's frequencied at 6.1 and Rifle's at 5.2. I once played the Callaway Titanium Hawkeye pieces of junk with graphite!!! They frequencied everywhere from 3.2 to 5.8 from the factory - seriously! It was great when I wanted to hit a 180 yard 9 iron, problem was I never knew when that shot would show up and it usually happened when I wanted to smooth a 145 yard 9 iron!

I use Ben Hogan Apex II irons with the original Apex stiff shafts still in them. I think they are 23 years old this year. Nothing feels better when you catch it solid. Nothing feels worse when you miss.

Wishon 550's, pw-8 in muscleback and 7-3I in cavity back.  Wishon Series 5 shafts in regular flex.  Last year after shooting the worst round of my life in a tournament I went to my neighbor, the certified clubmaker, and begged for help.  He made 3 demo 5-irons and did not mark nor tell me what length or flex they were.  After two weeks of trial, I returned and said "this one plays the best."  It was an R-flex, I had always played stiff, and it was standard length, I always played 1" long shafts.  Best $500 I ever spent on equipment.  These irons are sweet and consistent.  He made them up using MOI matching and the 3-iron plays like the 7-iron.  I have never hit irons longer nor hit as many quality 3 & 4 irons.  Love 'em.

Brand new for X-mas, Hogan FTX edge with apex#4 (stiff) shafts. I just got back from the range for the 1st time with them, and WOW, i absolutely love them!! I have never been a great long-iron hitter, but every single 3iron i hit was perfect. Of course, those range mats have a little forgiveness, but i've never had a better range session than today.

I use Callaway X-14 pro series with rifle 5.5 shafts.  Went to these after 8 years with the older regular style X-12's and its soo much better without all that offset.

Macgregor VIP 1025 CM w/Rifle flighted stiff shafts...I love them!  Mixed set, 3-6 are cavity and 7-P are muscle.  Buttery soft and absolutely beautiful!  They are my first set of forged irons and I can really feel my  golf shots now.  I am not a big fan of the way the new v-foils look but I hear good things about them.

I have not had them redone.    I've thought about it for years but never got it done. I played with them in high school and college then drifted away from the game. I figured it wasn't worth it. There are nice flat spots on the sweet spots. There isn't much of a groove left on them either. Amazingly they still spin well and I get good distance out of them. That probably has more to do with the modern balls. I'm getting a new set of irons from my in-laws. I should get to open them tomorrow. I'll be curious to see what I get. I don't know if I'll be able to let the Hogans go. I still love the old blades.

Santa found a brand new set of MP30's w/TT S300 shafts for $400.00 and a new TM V Steel 3 wood for $85.00 and couldn't pass them up Next project is to dump the MAS2 65g stiff shafts that're in my R580 and V Steel for something a little more consistent...

Regards,

Bob

I use Titleist 690 blades with x100's 2-wedge. I love them a lot, I've tried some cavity backs but can't seem to make the switch.  Love the feel of a blade, cant be matched by anyother club.

TaylorMade MB combo's with S300 sensicore stiff shafts. Lovely feel and easy workability. I had them bent 2 degree upright a year ago (pre- 1PS) and now having them bent to standard again!

Also have a TM R7 Quad 9.5' with stiff Purple Ice shaft.....great shaft for people with a high ball flight like myself.

Currently playing Nike Forged Blades with Project X 6.5.  Thinking of switching to either S400s or Project X 6.0.  Also, might be getting the new Bridgestone J33 combos.  What a great looking set of irons.  When I saw them I had to go home and change my boxers..  All I have to say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

waltice,

I really like the S400's, my go to 2 iron hybrid has one and I just can't miss with that club. I've also played the Bridgestones and liked them alot, but I played the blades, not the combos. I really like the Project X shafts but really prefer the extra weight of the S400's. With your swing speed, I think you would like them as well.

Looks like I've upgraded. I received a set of Wilson Pi5's for Christmas. They have the Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. Looks like it will be 60 here in KC on Tuesday. I've never touched a club in January before but I'm itching to hit them some more.

Man am I feeling outclassed. Whole bunch of blades on that list! Been wanting to switch out from Slingshots I got 2 summers ago, but keep telling myself that I don't get them until the hdcp drops some more.   Chicken or the egg?  Will I force myself to be a better ballstriker with less forgiving clubs?  Or should I become a better ballstriker before I get less forgiving clubs?  Either way Santa missed my house.

For me I just can't get over the look of an offset iron. No matter how great they feel when I hit them the look of them just bothers me. That's why I chose to stick with something that looks more like the old blades I've been playing for nearly 20 years.

I had a set of Powerbilts and then all Pings up until this set so the thick top line just sort of looks normal to me.  I have normal Rac wedges so I know that it doesn't have to be thick to work!  The offset is the real problem.  Just don't know if I am yanking them all left or if the club is helping me?  I know it is mostly me, but just sort of hoping I can place a little blame somewhere else once in awhile.

I am feeling relly outclassed, but then again as a 24 hcp and new, so what..3 & 4 - adams iron-wood hybrids with steel shafts; 5 - pw, gw, sw, lw nike cpr with standard steel shafts.  Nike's were new mid summer and adams new late summer.  So far I am very comfortable with the mix, all clubs seem to get the ball in the air very well.  No plans to upgrade yet.

Chuck:

I Play on pieces of crap with graphite shafts.  I can't even say what the make is.  I'm sure they are rip offs of rip offs.  My instructor gave me an old Great BB with a pro-something flex shaft...now that thing makes hitting the ball fun.  I was wondering if there is more "appropriate" clubs for the one plane swing.  I want to invest in some new "real" irons in the spring, but am at a loss as to what to look out for or how to go about it.  Any tips or advice out there? My instructor is in China right now taking advantage of the growing boom.  His stuff Might interest you he's at:   http://www.rhythmicgolf.com/ - www.rhythmicgolf.com/ and his name is Izidor Markic ("Izzy").  He created this method for teaching the swing, having come from a music background.  He's an amazing golfer AND a good teacher...

Cheers

Ping G2's sw-3 (3,4,5 are HL).  The shafts are stock and I have no idea the flex, probably regular.  I like the clubs but wish I had kept my old ping eye2's now.  I really want to try out the S59's.  I hit an S59 gap wedge yesterday and it felt so much sweeter than my vokey does.  The new wife may not want me spending money on new clubs since I just bought the G2's last summer.

New last year: Ping S59 for PW-6, Ping G2 for 5, 4, 3 iron - stock shaft, regular flex.  Bought Spring '05 after exhaustive search: it was between these and Bridgestone J33 combos (which I'd never heard of, but LOVED at a demo-day: problem was distributor didn't have any to actually sell!).  I'm very happy with the Ping combination.

I use mizuno mx-23's with the stock Exsar graphite shafts in stiff flex. They are a great set.  These forged clubs are forgiving and long provided you do your part in the hitting department. I would highly recommend them to mid level handicappers.  The single digit players may prefer the mp-30's.  I don't think i'll be going down to that level anytime soon. :)

I had some Hogan Apex Plus irons with a 4 (s-x) shaft but they got old so I upgraded to the Mizuno MP-32s with the S300 shaft. I always knew I hated that shaft and, though I loved those heads, I reaffirmed that I hate that shaft. Just like the Aldila driver shafts, the S300 doesn't work for me. The X100 is too much work. The S400 is the only one I like. For some reason, that 4 shaft from Hogan is great. One day I'm in a golf shop, quite disillusioned, and, would you believe, a lefty returned a brand new set of Hogan Apex Pluses - used maybe three or four times - and, cut a long story short, I got 'em for less than $200. I returned the Mizunos and still, a year later, havent' used the credit left over!

CQ, those TM hybrids are at least two degrees turned in. I gave mine up because it just wanted to hook. I never came close to hitting a cut with it unless I opened it up ridiculously. I have a Kazco in an x shaft (their own shaft) to replace it and a KZG 3-wood with a Penley Tour-xx shaft. Yeah, no hooks in that club!

As for frequency weighting/lies/loft, Callaway are the worst. Total junk. Rifle shafts are good, in my experience. Have you ever seen Swingsync? Interesting company which takes the view that it will find your "natural" frequency and match every club in the bag to it. I have a friend who's sponsored by them and he swears by the method.

Mizuno MP 60s 3-PW with Project X 5.5 Shafts.  I tried all kinds of clubs, and none could compare to the buttery feeling I get when I nut these babies.    Mizuno's forging is second to none.  Project X shaft is a gem.  I got them pured by my fitter.

Mizuno MP 30's Dynamic gold S300. I played the Precept Tour Premium irons before these, and dabbled with the Tourstage irons that came out after those. I love a good forged iron and have stuck with these since early '03. No immediate plans to replace them. I hate to say I don't like the look of the MP 60's but I do. I might just refresh my set by getting a new set of the MP 30's. That's If I don't come across an iron so good that I just have to switch to it. I like them and since they're a mizuno signature product iron, I can still buy a new set 3+ years after I bought my current ones. I thought of going to a clubfitter like Hot Stix and see if a different shaft might make them even better. Has anyone ever been fitted at Hot Stix? Does the process and club recomendations make it worth the price? Iv'e heard $300+ for a comprehensive fitting.
